Hooke's law states that the distance covered when springs are compressed or extended is proportional to the force applied, this means that when the force applied is bigger; the extension will increase. This realationship however is not directly proportional meaning that when a graph is plotted for the data, the line will not cross the origin.
Bed mattresses are an example; when a person with lighter weight lies on them; the compression will be less than when a heavier person lies on them.
